No One Was Ready To Work In This 90s Blockbuster, They Said ‘Nahi Chalegi’, The Film Gave Bollywood A Superstar

A film released three decades ago shocked the industry, especially for the portrayal of the lead role by its actor. It broke every Bollywood rule of its time and still became a massive hit.

Back then, no one expected this dark, twisted story to turn into a milestone, but it still went on to redefine what audiences like about the film and whatnot.

The directors took a huge risk by casting a relatively new actor, who is none other than Shah Rukh Khan. And the film? It is the iconic revenge thriller Baazigar.

When the Abbas–Mustan film was released in 1993, it not only gave SRK his breakthrough but also became the first big commercial success for Kajol and introduced Shilpa Shetty.

The film was the fourth-highest-grossing Hindi movie of the year and over time, it transformed into a cult classic loved by every generation.

Before the film’s release, there was hardly anyone who believed the film would work. Many felt audiences would reject the lead character for being too dark and too violent.

Screenwriter Javed Siddiqui told Bollywood Hungama, “When the project started, people said you have made a negative character into a hero… he commits five murders. They felt the audience wouldn’t accept it.”

Amid all the doubts, only Shah Rukh was confident. Siddiqui said, “He told us, ‘I will pull it off.’ He had something different in him and he was extremely hardworking.”

Siddiqui also remembered the early days when SRK was not a star yet. He often visited the writers’ hotel room in Khar because he was not very busy those days.

These small interactions, long discussions and the young actor’s determination eventually shaped the unforgettable performance that defined the film.

The movie featured a strong ensemble cast including Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Dalip Tahil, Johnny Lever, Siddharth Ray, Rakhee, Anant Mahadevan and others.
