One of the Most Disturbing Children’s Movies of All Time Finds Streaming Success in America
We’re now at the end of our first full week of October, and it’s safe to say that the world is already in the spooky season spirit. With The Conjuring: Last Rites dominating the iTunes charts and the hotly anticipated Black Phone 2 now just a week away, the devil’s favorite season is officially in full swing. However, it isn’t just new titles that are satisfying the morbid taste buds of horror fans, with some of the finest work in the genre’s past coming back to haunt the streaming charts this month.
At the time of writing, one of the most disturbing children’s movies of all time, the genius Coraline, is back in the streaming charts as one of the ten most-streamed movies on Pluto in the U.S. The first stop-motion film produced by Laika, Henry Selick‘s visionary adaptation of the Neil Gaiman story has become somewhat of a regular feature in many Halloween households year after year. Having delivered button-eyed nightmares to children ever since its 2009 debut, Coraline continues to be a favorite of both animation and horror fans, showcased by its financially successful box office re-release this time last year. For anyone who has yet to have their spooky season blessed by Coraline, here’s a look at the movie’s synopsis:
“While exploring her new home, a girl named Coraline (Dakota Fanning) discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own but, in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother (Teri Hatcher) and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever. Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back to her own family and life.”
‘Coraline’ Is One of the Highest-Grossing Stop-Motion Movies Ever
Due to the sheer length of time and detailed precision needed to craft a big-name stop-motion feature, they are few and far between in the cinematic landscape. Although Coraline only made a still respectable $167 million at the global box office, split between a domestic haul of $116 million and just $50 million from overseas markets, this was enough to catapult it to third in the all-time list of highest-grossing stop-motion movies, a position it holds to this day. Second on the list, with $197 million, is Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, with another Aardman project, the highly-acclaimed Chicken Run, in first place.
Coraline is streaming now on Pluto.
