’Reacher’s Alan Ritchson Is a WWII Action Hero in Guy Ritchie’s Underrated Adventure Movie Dominating Streaming Charts
The success that it couldn’t achieve at the box office is flowing in several times over for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on home video. The World War II action movie, directed by Guy Ritchie and featuring an eclectic cast, has become a fixture on the streaming and PVOD charts, having recently broken into the iTunes list domestically. The movie had previously tasted success on HBO Max and Prime Video internationally. Released in domestic theaters last year, the movie was a box office disappointment like several of Ritchie’s recent works, but audiences at home seem to be really enjoying the violent war movie.
According to FlixPatrol, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare found a spot on HBO Max charts internationally and on the iTunes charts domestically on September 30. The movie earned under $30 million at the box office last year, against a reported budget of $60 million. Designed as a sort of Inglourious Basterds replacement, the movie featured Henry Cavill, Henry Golding, Alan Ritchson, Eiza González, and Alex Pettyfer, presenting a highly fictionalized account of the adventures conducted by a real-life World War II organization.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opened to mixed reviews, and is currently sitting at a 68% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Cranking up a true story of derring-do into a high-octane action flick that’s heavy on spectacle if not suspense, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is another solid entry into Guy Ritchie’s pantheon.” The movie proved to be a big hit with audiences even before it landed on home video; it holds a 91% audience score on RT, and an A- CinemaScore from opening day crowds.
Guy Ritchie Has Found Success on Streaming With ‘Fountain of Youth’ and ‘MobLand’
While Ritchie has delivered successful projects in recent years, his box office appeal has most definitely cracked. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare isn’t his only recent film to have underperformed at the box office; he also directed the failed franchise-starters The Man from UNCLE, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. His latest release was the $180 million Apple hit Fountain of Youth. Ritchie has two new movies lined up, as well as the Young Sherlock show for Prime Video. Earlier this year, he delivered the hit Paramount+ series MobLand. You can watch all these projects at home and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
