Sam Raimi Returns With Doctor Strange Star in New Horror Movie
Sam Raimi’s next feature after Doctor Strange 2, Send Help, has debuted its trailer, starring Dylan O’Brien and Rachel McAdams. This also marks the auteur’s return to the realm of horrors, and from the trailer, it’s evident the movie will carry on the director’s brand of comedy against an intense backdrop.
The movie follows the two colleagues, Linda and Bradley, who aren’t exactly too fond of each other, as the latter, her boss, subjects Linda to mistreatment at work. But the script flips after the two find themselves stranded on an Island, and with no help on the horizon, the dynamic shifts dramatically.
Roles Reverse After Two Co-Workers Are Stranded in Send Help
The first minute of the trailer makes us root for Rachel McAdams’ Linda, as emotional torment by a power-tripping, abusive boss is unfortunately all too familiar. However, after surviving a plane crash, the two of them find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere, leading to a shift in power balance with Linda taking charge to ensure their survival.
Speaking of the characters played by McAdams and O’Brien, Raimi recalled being blown away by the pitch, revealing that he wanted to helm the movie right away (via EW). The Spider-Man director further described the story as an underdog tale, as established from the opening minute of the trailer, while also adding that it’s a story about empowerment and transformation.
What I really love about this story is that it’s an underdog tale at its core. Not only is it about survival on a deserted island, but it’s also a story of female empowerment and transformation.. Watching a once-powerful boss find himself dependent on someone he underestimated is satisfying. Our story is universal! We need to encourage our society to treat people with respect and kindness, regardless of status. It’s especially rewarding to see our heroine, Linda, come into her own in such an unexpected environment.
Written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, notable for 2017’s Baywatch, and produced by Zainab Azizi and Raimi himself, it’ll be interesting to see how the director’s homecoming to horror will pan out.
