Sony Plans to Start Shooting Horizon Movie in 2026, with 2027 Release Planned

Sony’s live action movie adaptation of Horizon will start shooting in 2026, with the company currently looking to lock down a director.
According to court filings seen by The Game Post, the film already has a working script and is getting close to entering production. The company hopes to release the movie in 2027.
In a statement submitted as part of the platform holder’s legal proceedings with Tencent, PS Productions boss Asad Qizilbash said:
“We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures. We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027. The live-action film follows the recent collaborations between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions on the 2022 film Uncharted and the 2023 film Gran Turismo.”
PlayStation is suing Tencent over copycat game Light of Motiram, which it’s described as a “slavish clone”. It’s currently trying to prove to the courts that the rip-off has materially damaged its own franchise.
The movie is mentioned because Sony is trying to posit the importance of Aloy to its business, claiming she is a “brand symbol”. The company argues that by using a similar protagonist, Light of Motiram is confusing consumers.
This court case has already spilled several other secrets about PlayStation’s business, like the fact that the organisation flew to China expecting to see a pitch for a mobile version of The Last of Us.
Instead, Tencent simply pitched it on a Horizon project instead, which Sony claims later morphed into Light of Motiram.
A Horizon movie was officially announced at CES earlier in the year, but this is the first time we’ve heard about its progress.
Sony had previously planned to make a television series based on the post-apocalyptic franchise with Netflix, but this deal collapsed, forcing it to explore the possibility of a movie instead.
