Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back is getting a live-action movie adaptation by Hirokazu Kore-eda
After the anime adaptation last year, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back is set to receive a live-action movie that will be directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda.
This upcoming live-action movie was revealed just recently, with info being shared on its official website. There, we got our first look at the movie via two posters, both of which recreate some notable scenes from the manga.
While there are not a lot of details yet (we don’t even have the cast list), what we do know is that the film is written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Meanwhile, the film’s music is composed by Yuta Bando (of BELLE fame). We also know that this movie is set to be released sometime in 2026.
For those unfamiliar, Kore-eda is perhaps one of the most acclaimed contemporary Japanese directors. He is best known for his film Shoplifters, which took home the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival – the event’s highest honor. Kore-eda has also won a Cannes Jury Prize in 2013 for his film Like Father, Like Son. Plus, in 2023, he directed Monster, a movie that won the Best Screenplay award at Cannes (though that film was written by Yuji Sakamoto).
Aside from feature-length films, Kore-eda has also worked on two Netflix originals: The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House in 2023 and Asura earlier this year.
It’s fair to say that Kore-eda directing the Look Back live-action movie is exciting. After all, not only is he a renowned director, but he’s also perhaps the perfect choice. That’s because several Kore-eda projects are based on manga. These include The Makanai (based on Kiyo in Kyoto), Our Little Sister (based on Umimachi Diary), and Air Doll (based on Kuuki Ningyo).
This is not the only Kore-eda movie for 2026, as the director is also working on a feature film titled “Sheep in the Box.”
