The Action Movie Quentin Tarantino Said He Was “Born To Make” Slashes Streaming Competition
It is only because director Quentin Tarantino considers the two-part Kill Bill as one singular experience that he can still make another movie. He’d have otherwise walked himself into a corner, having declared that he would retire after making 10 feature films. Tarantino is already trying to find loopholes in this self-imposed restriction. He’s writing books, contemplating long-form storytelling, and even theater. However, he still hasn’t announced his would-be final film. In the meantime, however, Kill Bill: Volume 1 is having a moment on home video, as domestic audiences flock to it on the free Pluto streaming service.
According to FlixPatrol, Kill Bill 1 was the fifth-most-watched title on the Pluto charts on October 22 and October 23, when the leader board was topped by Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Godfather. Kill Bill 1 beat out a diverse range of movies, including the young adult adaptation Divergent, the landmark sequel The Godfather: Part II, and the Will Smith rom-comHitch. Kill Bill 1 was released to positive reviews in 2003, and was followed by Kill Bill: Volume 2 a year later. Combined, the two movies made over $300 million worldwide, against a combined budget of $60 million. Kill Bill 1 was the more successful of the two, making $180 million globally.
It was also (marginally) better reviewed on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where it currently holds an 85% score, compared to its sequel’s 84%. The website’s consensus reads, “Kill Bill is admittedly little more than a stylish revenge thriller — albeit one that benefits from a wildly inventive surfeit of style.” Starring Uma Thurman as a vengeful bride left for dead on her wedding day, the movie saw Tarantino at his most flamboyant. In an interview on “The Church of Tarantino” podcast earlier this year, the filmmaker said that Kill Bill was the movie he was “born to make.” In his own words:
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my favorite, Inglourious Basterds is my best. But I think Kill Bill is the ultimate Quentin movie, like nobody else could’ve made it. Every aspect about it is so particularly ripped, like with tentacles and bloody tissue, from my imagination and my id and my loves and my passion and my obsession. So I think Kill Bill is the movie I was born to make, I think Inglourious Basterds is my masterpiece, but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my favorite.”
Tarantino’s Elusive Combined Cut of ‘Kill Bill’ Is Coming to Theaters
Tarantino’s fans can look forward to the long-awaited release of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, the legendary combined cut of the two parts, which will be released theatrically in December. You can watch Kill Bill on Pluto domestically, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
