‘The Exorcist,’ ‘Phantom of the Opera’ with live score
We’re deep in the throes of horror movie season, and theaters are putting up pre-horror classics and more modern nightmare fodder.
Here are all the movies you can catch around the Twin Cities this week.
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) with live music
Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Landmark Lagoon Theatres
The Phantom of the Opera was a landmark silent film, with Lon Chaney putting in one of the great dramatic performances of the silent era. Sure, the romance and intrigue have been worn away a bit by time — you know, sound, color, that kind of thing — but it’ll get a fresh coat of paint on Wednesday when it’s accompanied by a live score from the Denver-based Quarkestra Orchestra.
Spirited Away (2001)
Wednesday, Oct. 22, at various theaters
Since we highlighted this one last week, it seemed like you could use a reminder that there’s one more day to catch Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away in theaters. Whether or not you think it’s his best movie, it’s inarguably a beautiful one that looks stunning on the big screen.
In Miyazaki’s movie, a young girl mistakenly wanders into a magical realm where her parents are turned into hogs, she’s put to work at a spa for spirits, and she’s relying on the mysterious Haku, who is sometimes a dragon, to help her escape.
The Thing (1982)
Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Mann Edina Theatres and Mann Plymouth Grand 15
Here’s another that we’re highlighting once more. In John Carpenter’s icy horror-thriller, MacReady (Kurt Russell) is part of an Antarctic research team that can’t catch a break. It’s a rough assignment even before a shape-shifting alien lifeform appears, hell-bent on absorbing everything with which it comes into contact. It takes on the shape of the people it absorbs, so the team — a stacked cast of character actors that includes Keith David, Wilford Brimley, Charles Hallahan, T.K. Carter, and Richard Dysart — can’t trust anyone, including the dogs.
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Thursday, Oct. 23, at Grandview Theatres; and Monday, Oct. 27, and Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Mann Edina Theatres
Of all the characters you could broadly tie back to the tradition of Universal monsters, werewolves (or the Wolf Man) are arguably the creatures that have had the least success translating into interesting or scary movies. Still, there are exceptions, such as The Howling and An American Werewolf in London.
Two American college students (David Naughton, Griffin Dunne) are attacked by a werewolf in a small country village while backpacking through England. Its horror is less about the peril of others and more about what they’ll do to save themselves from what they’ve become.
The Exorcist (1973)
Sunday, Oct. 26–Tuesday, Oct. 28, at The Trylon Cinema
Traumatizing viewers for more than 50 years, The Exorcist probably belongs on the Mount Rushmore of horror movies. It’s not high concept. It’s just creepy as hell.
Regan (Linda Blair) has been possessed by something, and when a couple of Catholic priests arrive to conduct an exorcism, things get much, much worse.
Max Fleischer Halloween Party
Sunday, Oct. 26, at Alamo Drafthouse
Pioneering animator Max Fleischer is getting the spotlight again at the Alamo. The Woodbury theater will screen restorations of his animated shorts that include appearances from Betty Boop and Koko the Clown, as well as “The Cobweb Hotel,” which you can see above.
