The Most Awarded Horror Movie of All Time Arrives on a Free Streamer in Time for Halloween
A few pages into reading the script for The Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins immediately recognized he was holding a potential classic in his hands. He was right. Three decades and counting, Jonathan Demme‘s chilling masterpiece remains one of the greatest horror movies of all time, and towers above the competition at a comfortable distance. Since its 1991 release, no other movie has repeated its biggest feat, which was winning the Big 5 categories at the Oscars. It will forever be one of the most chilling, haunting, brilliant horror movies ever made, making it a perfect watch for the spooky season. Thankfully, you won’t have to pay a dime to relive the thrill as The Silence of the Lambs has been added to Tubi’s menu of treats this Halloween.
While it’s often labeled simply as a horror film, the movie is in fact a blend of different genres. It can be regarded as part psychological thriller, part detective story, and part horror, a film about workplace discrimination, human psychology, as well as the evil that grows from it. The story follows Jodie Foster as a young FBI trainee, Clarice Starling, tasked with seeking the help of an incarcerated serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins), to catch another serial killer, the elusive “Buffalo Bill,” who targets women. What follows is a disturbing psychological chess match, as Hannibal begins to toy with Clarice’s mind, weakening her defenses by exploiting her fears and past trauma.
One of the film’s achievements is how it propelled author Thomas Harris’ chilling creation, Hannibal Lecter, to worldwide recognition on-screen. That’s no small feat, considering Michael Mann had already attempted to bring Lecter to life in 1986’s Manhunter, where Brian Cox played the character to limited success. It wasn’t until The Silence of the Lambs that Lecter became an influential character in cinema, with its success also prompting a more favorable review of Manhunter. The film’s legacy continued with a 2001 sequel, Hannibal, followed by the prequels Red Dragon (2002) and Hannibal Rising (2007).
Should ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ Get a Remake?
While many fans would rather The Silence of the Lambs remain untouched, Hollywood’s remake fever might eventually reach even this classic. One creative has already begun ruminating on an idea. Recently, Hannibal series creator Bryan Fuller revealed his “dream project” would be a limited-series remake starring Mads Mikkelsen reprising Lecter and Zendaya as Clarice. “My dream project is to do a limited series of Silence of the Lambs with Mads and Zendaya,” Fuller shared, teasing his plans for a modern reimagining. It’s an ambitious idea but a risky one. Revisiting such an untouchable masterpiece would invite heavy scrutiny, but in today’s era of reboots and revivals, it might only be a matter of time.
The Silence of the Lambs lands on Tubi on November 1.
