The Most Underrated Christmas Movie of the Century Is a Streaming Hit
From her Oscar-winning turn in Annie Hall to top performances in the likes of The Godfather, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Baby Boom, Father of the Bride, and more, Diane Keaton is undoubtedly one of the most beloved names in Hollywood history, even earning the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2017. Sadly, earlier this year, Keaton passed away aged 79, leaving behind a legacy of incredible projects on both the big and small screen as well as the stage.
Less than two months after her death, one of Keaton’s most underrated movies, and one of the most underrated Christmas movies of this century, is a streaming hit at the start of December. At the time of writing, Thomas Bezucha‘s The Family Stone is one of the ten most-streamed movies on Prime Video in the U.S. Keaton is joined by a stacked cast in the modern holiday gem, including Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Rachel McAdams, and more. The film opened 20 years ago to mixed reviews, earning just 52% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes with the consensus reading, “This family holiday dramedy features fine performances but awkward shifts of tone.” Thankfully, audiences disagreed, and the movie’s legacy has only grown in the two decades since. A synopsis for The Family Stone reads:
“Everett Stone (Dermot Mulroney) wants to bring his girlfriend, Meredith Morton (Sarah Jessica Parker), to meet his bohemian Connecticut family at Christmas. Straitlaced Meredith, feeling she needs backup, asks her sister Julie (Claire Danes) to come along. Hoping to win the approval of her boyfriend’s parents Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) and the rest of the family, instead Meredith succeeds only in highlighting her uptight personality and making Everett doubt his intentions.”
How Did ‘The Family Stone’ Perform at the Box Office?
Produced for just $18 million, The Family Stone didn’t have many tickets to sell before it became financially successful. Thankfully, it passed this simple test with flying colors, returning 5.1 times this investment with a global box office haul of $92 million. Split between $60 million in domestic revenue and a further $32 million from overseas markets, The Family Stone‘s box office gross is enough to make it Diane Keaton‘s third-highest box office hit since it premiered.
The Family Stone is one of the most-watched movies on Prime Video. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
