The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releases in April 2026 | ScreenHub Australia
Nintendo has officially revealed the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, confirming this next Super Mario adaptation will be partially inspired by the Super Mario Galaxy 3D platformers. Strangely enough, this movie title was actually leaked a few months back, on tie-in bottles of Old Spice that also revealed Yoshi’s wide-eyed film design – but now, we have official confirmation that isn’t tied to scents like ‘Space Mischief’ and ‘Cosmic Quest.’
During the latest Nintendo Direct, the film was hyped up with a brief clip of the Mushroom Kingdom, and the long journey up into the stars, where the star-like Lumas live. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri also popped in with new details, confirming the returning cast, and sharing excitement about what’s to come.
As noted, the cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. We’ll likely hear more about new cast members, and other returning ones, in the months ahead.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie – First Trailer
As previously announced, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set to release in cinemas on 3 April 2026, so it’s actually not that far away. Given the success of this movie’s predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie (which became a box office smash hit, despite lukewarm reception from fans), it certainly makes sense to capitalise on the furore.
Heading to the world of Super Mario Galaxy also seems like a clever idea, given the enthusiastic fandom around these particular games, and the potential in exploring new, brighter worlds with more Lumas floating around.
Nintendo re-releases Super Mario Galaxy for Nintendo Switch
For new and returning fans, Nintendo has paired this trailer release with a neat surprise: Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are being re-released for Nintendo Switch on 2 October 2025. Mario and Rosalina are also getting two new Galaxy-themed amiibo figurines, which will launch in April 2026.
Now, there are some caveats here. First, it’s very cool to see Super Mario Galaxy 2 finally making its way to Nintendo Switch, after all these years. But it’s important to know Super Mario Galaxy was already available for Nintendo Switch once, as part of the limited-time Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection. This collection was quite controversial at the time of release, as it had a specific availability window and was only available for purchase for six months, for reasons that were never made clear.
Now, Nintendo is re-releasing one-third of this collection, with Super Mario Galaxy launching in a physical two-pack with Super Mario Galaxy 2 – one that will retail for AUD $89.95 (or USD $69.99). So if you’re keen to own Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Nintendo Switch physically, and you already bought the 3D All-Stars collection, you will need to double-dip.
Otherwise, the games will be available for individual purchase digitally, for AUD $59.95 (or USD $39.99) each.
This price has already caused quite a stir online, with many lamenting the high price tag for games that are more than a decade old. As folks have noted, the pricing is very similar to the original release pricing for the games, which is not typical of classic re-releases. Regardless, it’s more than likely keen fans will still be willing to fork out to re-experience these games on Nintendo Switch.
With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now officially announced, it appears we’ll be hearing much more about Mario’s space-faring adventures in the coming weeks and months, so stay tuned.
