Indian cinema has seen many legendary actors whose on-screen presence made audiences laugh, cry, and celebrate stories in all their forms. Among the golden era of stars was one such actor whose impeccable comic timing became iconic over the decades. Movies like Padosan, Pyaar Kiye Jaa, and Bombay to Goa remain unforgettable classics, with comedy that continues to entertain even today.
But beyond the world of films and stardom, this actor was also known for his deep sense of faith. A devoted Muslim, he would observe fasts during the holy month of Ramzan. Interestingly, as actress Shubha Khote once revealed, he also observed fasts during the sacred month of Shravan, followed by Hindus.
Shubha, who frequently shared screen space with him in the 1950s and 1960s, recalled how they would often accompany each other during their respective fasts. “When we worked together, I used to fast in the month of Shravan, and when it started getting difficult, I started doing Mondays and Saturdays,” the veteran actress shared on Red FM Podcasts, adding that he too would keep fasts on those days while she joined him in fasting on Fridays during Ramzan.
Shubha Khote Revealed That They Followed “Each Other’s Customs”
Meanwhile, Mehmood used to observe fast on Fridays during the month of Ramzan. Their bond was so special that, despite belonging to different religions, they would keep fast together. “He used to follow my customs, like he would also fast on Mondays and Saturdays, and I would also fast with him on Fridays. We worked together so much that we started following each other’s customs,” Shubha Khote added.
Further, the 88-year-old actress revealed that they would either eat vegetarian food or “fasting food”. Shubha Khote also mentioned that she, Mehmood, and Anant Balwant Dhumal, affectionately known as Dhumal Dada, used to spend a lot of time together.
