Netflix has a vast library of movies and some of the best war movies like Hacksaw Ridge and The Darkest Hour are available there.

Directed by Steve McQueen and starring Saoirse Ronan, Blitz follows a young boy named George living in London during World War II. Ronan plays his mother, Rita, who forces her son to move away from the much-targeted city. George runs away from his newfound home and heads back to London while his mother endlessly searches for him. It’ll be interesting to see the war from a child’s perspective as he naively makes his way back into danger.

McQueen is beloved for his culturally impactful movies like 12 Years a Slave. This time, McQueen pays tribute to his hometown, London, and explores the people who endured sleepless nights during the Blitz. Nothing hits harder than the emotional toll of a war-set movie, but there won’t be many battles in the movie as McQueen stays grounded.

M. Night Shyamalan discusses the audience reaction to the Trap trailer, and why Josh Hartnett was perfect for the role of Cooper.

M. Night Shyamalan is up to his usual tricks with Trap, which has a twist up its sleeve. The movie follows Cooper and his daughter at a concert where everything is normal until he realizes the security presence is over the top. It turns out the concert was a trap made to capture an unknown serial killer, revealed to be Cooper. The confined nature of the setting is a genius but risky move by the police, as many innocents stand between the two sides.

Shyamalan has had more misses than hits as of late, with Old being an example of a sure-fire miss. But audiences are seemingly always ready for Shyamalan’s next trick as he comes up with new, inventive genre ideas. Shyamalan writes and makes movies at such a fast rate, which is rare for filmmakers nowadays. For fans, it’s always knowing there is another Shyamalan mystery around the corner.

7 Barry Jenkins Is an Odd Choice to Direct Mufasa: The Lion King

Mufasa: The Lion King Releases December 20th in Cinemas

Mufasa and Simba sitting on a cliff in the CGI The Lion King

  • Mufasa: The Lion King is an origin story prequel.

Barry Jenkins directs Mufasa: The Lion King, a prequel that will chronicle the life of Simba’s father, Mufasa. Told through flashbacks, Mufasa is introduced as a young cub who is taken in by a lion with royal heritage. What ensues is an adventure that will eventually lead to Mufasa becoming the noble father that fans know from the original animated Lion King movie.

The Moonlight director is a strange choice for this prequel as he’s probably the last person most thought would be involved in a franchise movie. Jenkins is known for telling deeply personal stories with a humane touch and a candid approach. Jenkins was drawn to Mufasa’s story as he grew up to become the iconic lion seen in the original movie. Naturally, with the live-action Lion King‘s poor response, fans of Jenkins are worried about his involvement as it could tarnish his perfect resume to date.

6 Ridley Scott Revives His 2000 Classic With Gladiator II

Gladiator II Releases November 22nd in Cinemas

  • Gladiator finally gets a sequel after twenty-four years.

10 Best Movies Like Gladiator, Ranked

After watching Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, it’s only natural to want another historical epic, and there are many that perfectly fit the bill.

Ridley Scott directs this high-budget legacy sequel to Gladiator. The story begins decades after the original movie with Pedro Pascal’s Marcus Acacius leading an army of Romans into battle. After the invasion, Paul Mescal’s Lucius, the grandson of ex-Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, is forced into slavery where he takes up gladiator fighting.

Gladiator II is a passion project for Scott as he put years into making the movie. The budget is reportedly around $300 million, but it’s doubtful Scott has the draw with modern audiences to make the money back through just his name. Nevertheless, Scott is a legendary director known for his genre movies, so it’s good to see him retreading on Gladiator after Alien got the legacy sequel treatment with Scott at the helm.

5 Todd Phillips Goes Bold in Joker: Folie à Deux

Joker’s Strangest Quirk in The Dark Knight Has a Surprising Behind-the-Scenes Explanation

Heath Ledger’s legendary portrayal of the Joker in the Dark Knight is unforgettable. However, one strange character tic is not what it seems.

Todd Phillips’ Joker musical sequel begins with Arthur Fleck incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital. Arthur meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, during his time there before leaving Arkham for the outside world. The couple goes on an adventure that turns into a movie musical, which is fitting as the genre is naturally romantic. With Joker’s mind, he could very well be living a fantasy similar to what happened in the first movie with Zazie Beetz’s character.

Todd Phillips gained extreme popularity with the release of Joker, although the movie did have its detractors. Considering the great success Phillips had with the first movie, it makes sense why he was quickly locked in to direct the sequel. The decision to make it a musical is bold as superhero musicals are not frequently made, so it could make or break the movie. His time directing The Hangover movies set him up to get his name in for the Joker job, so he owes a lot to that franchise.

Cailee Spaeny looks scared in the trailer for Alien: Romulus

  • Alien: Romulus is the seventh installment of the Alien franchise.

This entry will feature a group of young adults, Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced are among the cast, who find themselves face-to-face with Scott’s infamous aliens who threaten to kill the new band of characters.

Alien: Romulus is said to be isolated and won’t directly connect to past entries. However, it’s been confirmed that it will be set after Alien but before Aliens, which gives a rough idea of the franchise’s continuity when including Fede Álvarez’s new movie. Álvarez impressed with 2013’s Evil Dead before making the extremely tense Don’t Breathe. His horror sensibilities make him a perfect match for Alien: Romulus, as suspense is vital, and he’s proven he knows how to create plenty of it.

1 Robert Eggers Returns to Horror With Nosferatu Remake

Nosferatu Releases December 25th in Cinemas

  • The original Nosferatu was a German silent movie released in 1922.

Robert Eggers has been developing a Nosferatu remake for over nine years, and it’s finally coming out this year. The plot follows Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård), aka Nosferatu, a vampire who lives in Transylvania. Nosferatu is derived from a Romanian word that means “the offensive one,” which is fitting given his terrifying looks. Little was shown of Skarsgård’s Nosferatu in the trailer, but based on Eggers’ previous movies, viewers can trust in his ability to scare. Orlok preys on a local woman who is the wife of his estate agent as he becomes obsessed with her.

Robert Eggers is one of the best contemporary directors, known for making horrors like The Witch and The Lighthouse. Eggers’ movies are often set in specific time periods, which makes Nosferatu a perfect project as it’s a vampire movie set in the past in the Transylvanian wilderness. Eggers has garnered a large set of fans who appreciate his minimalist approach to horror, which is seen once again in Egger’s Nosferatu first look.
