While Alana Haim is best known for being one-third of Haim, the indie band she formed with her sisters, her career for the last few years has spanned both music and film. Now, she’s been cast in two more films to continue to expand that other side of her work.
The band Haim shot to fame in 2012 off the back of singles like ‘Forever’ and ‘Don’t Save Me’. They established themselves as a key act of the new indie scene with the three-piece band captivating crowds with their natural sibling synergy translating to tight performances and effortlessly catchy tracks. In the band, Alana Haim does some vocals as well as playing the guitar, keyboards, percussion, synths, keys and more.
All three of the sisters have their own side projects outside of the group. Este Haim worked as the music supervisor on The White Lotus and a few other projects. Danielle Haim has been a session musician appearing on albums by artists like Clairo and Vampire Weekend. But for Alana Haim, she’s balancing her love for music with a love for acting.
In 2021, she made her acting debut in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza. She plays Alana Kane opposite Cooper Hoffman as Gary Valentine, a child actor turned directionless teenager. The film was well received and gained some major accolades, including BAFTA, Critic’s Choice, and Golden Globe award nominations for Haim as best actress.
Now, she’s been cast in two new projects. The first will see her acting alongside Challengers star Josh O’Connor in an art-heist drama called The Mastermind, directed by Kelly Reichardt. After that, she will join Zendaya and Robert Pattinson in the domestic thriller The Drama. The project is being directed by Kristoffer Borgli, who made the 2022 film Sick Of Myself, and is being co-produced by Ari Aster, the man behind Midsommar, Hereditary, and Beau Is Afraid.
Haim has also been locked in to star in Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film, even though the project remains a mystery. The movie is still untitled, with little to no details about it. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, it will be released in 2025 by Warner Bros and may include music from longtime collaborator Jonny Greenwood.
Both The Mastermind and The Drama are still only in pre-production, with a long way to go before the projects get underway and any more details are released. But following her award nominations for Licorice Pizza, Haim’s return to the screens could put her on course for wins this time around.
