Fresh off his show-stealing performance in Oppenheimer, Alden Ehrenreich has joined the cast for Zach Cregger’s upcoming film Weapons, his follow-up to 2022’s Barbarian.
According to Empire, Alden Ehrenreich has been cast in New Line Cinema’s Weapons, which already has quite the star-studded cast featuring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner. Specific details about the film aren’t known as of yet but the film has been described as, “an interrelated, multistory horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia.” Ehrenreich will also be seen in Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ miniseries Ironheart, which is expected to be released in 2025.

Pedro Pascal Was Previously Cast in Weapons
While Alden Ehrenreich has joined the cast, Pedro Pascal was originally attached to star in the film but was unable to continue forward with the project due to his busy schedule. Pascal is set to star as Reed Richards in Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four film, which made him unavailable to star in Weapons. Garner will be alongside Pascal in that film, set to appear as Shalla-Bal, a smaller role that will allow her to take part in both movies. Ehrenreich had quite the year in 2023, appearing in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer, as well as Chloe Domont’s thriller Fair Game. His recent choices in roles show a willingness to step into other genres that challenge the audience’s perception of him as an actor and being cast in Weapons is another step in that direction.
Cregger’s upcoming horror film is still in the pre-production phase but will begin shooting in May. His previous film 2022’s Barbarian, was a critical and commercial success as it amassed a domestic box office return of $40.84 million on just a $4 million budget. Barbarian proved to studios that Cregger has the aptitude to direct a horror hit and seems to be attracting the attention of Hollywood stars as well. The addition of Ehrenreich to the already formidable cast, shows that proven acting talent are more than eager to join Cregger on what he puts out next.
