Horror movie fans can scare themselves silly after a ‘deviously twisted’ flick, with a star-packed cast, was added to Netflix.
Infinity Pool premiered in January, 2023, with Alexander Skarsgård, Mia Goth and Cleopatra Coleman leading the cast.
The scare-fest, written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg, focused on novelist James Foster (Alexander) and his partner Em (Cleopatra) jetting to an idyllic resort on holiday.
They bump into Gabi (Mia), who is a fan of James’ book and invites them to dinner – however, things take an unnerving turn when the author accidentally kills someone, before learning the bizarre way that tourists are penalized for crimes.
As things become increasingly tense, will anyone leave the trip unscathed?
Thankfully, those who missed the cinema release can now find out as Infinity Pool has been added to the streaming service – but you might need a pillow to hide behind…
The film currently boasts a huge Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 87%, compared to the audience ranking of 52%.
Heaping praise on Brandon’s efforts, Empire’s Sophie Butcher described it as ‘a slick, satirical, insane thrill-ride’.
Todd Jorgenson of Cinemalogue agreed: ‘This deviously twisted science-fiction satire balances quirks and frights while finding its offbeat rhythm amid a beautiful but haunting exotic backdrop that conceals some disturbing secrets.’
Taylor Antrim, from Vogue, commended: ‘I won’t forget Infinity Pool, even though I closed my eyes through a lot of it.’
‘It’s one hell of a twisted ride with a troupe of truly awful characters as our guide,’ Ed Gibbs of Time Out wrote. ‘It’s damn-near unmissable and, from a safe distance, addictive as all hell.’
As Geoggrey Macnab from the Independent added: ‘Blood-churning moments are combined with a depth of characterisation you don’t always get in more conventional horror fare.
‘In its morbid and provocative way, the film is often funny but it’s thought-provoking and very creepy too.’
Brandon, son of renowned filmmaker David Cronenberg, previously unpacked the bonkers plot in a chat with Den of Geek, sharing that the idea came from a short story he wrote.
‘It started with a short story I was writing, that just essentially was the first execution scene,’ he said.
‘So it started with the idea of doubling, and a double of yourself being executed and watching that execution.
‘Then when I expanded it, I started to think about some experiences I had a number of years ago that partly informed the setting.’
Infinity Pool is available to stream on Netflix now.
