Bill Kong aims to bring the Hong Kong film industry back to the summit of the global action movie genre, starting with the upcoming martial arts film The Furious. The veteran Asian producer was behind motion pictures such as Jet Li’s Fearless, Hope, and the Academy Award-winning Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon.
The Furious, which has started production in Bangkok, is an English-language martial arts action thriller directed by Japanese stunt director and action choreographer Tanigaki Kenji (Monkey King). Producer Kong told Variety that he intended to make a film that would have a global impact. “I’m going to do an action movie that rocks the world. And to prove that Hong Kong still has something to give the film industry,” he said. “I want to show that Asian people can still make an action movie that is better than the rest of the world.”

The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon producer sets the bar high for The Furious, discussing his expectations for the upcoming revenge actioner. “If we fail, The Furious will only be as good as The Raid or Taken. We also want the characters to move people,” he stated. “Through this film, I want us to discover the new Yuen Woo-ping, the new Sammo Hung, and the new Donnie Yen.” Kong compared Kenji to Hollywood directors who have made the transition from helming stunts to directing, emphasizing his suitability for the movie.
There Are High Hopes For The Furious
“Think what Chad Stahelski was before directing John Wick, of Deadpool‘s David Leitch, or Extraction‘s Sam Hargraves. That’s what Tanagaki is in Asia right now,” Kong said. The producer revealed the JohnWick director also believes in the potential of Asian action films. “Now is the time to make a great Asian action film. We have the people and the motivation. Chad Stahelski follows every Asian action movie and I remember he once told me, ‘You (Asian filmmakers) don’t know your own strengths,’” Kong recounted.

A description of The Furious reads, “When his daughter is snatched off the street, simple tradesman Konggu fights his way through a complex web of criminals in a frantic attempt to win her back by any means necessary. His only ally is tireless journalist Navin. The two men from utterly different backgrounds must learn to trust, collaborate, and draw on combat skills from their own hidden pasts.”
The movie stars Xie Miao, Joe Taslim (The Raid: Redemption, Mortal Kombat), Jeeja Yanin (Chocolate), Yayan Ruhian (StarWars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, The Raid), and Yang Enu.
The Furious is yet to schedule a release date.
