Daisy Ridley Teases a Possible Star Wars Trilogy for Rey Skywalker

Rey Skywalker actress Daisy Ridley has teased her return to the Star Wars universe in the upcoming sequel Star Wars: New Jedi Order, which is the first live-action film to feature her character since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. However, in her most recent comments regarding the upcoming movie, Ridley seemed to hint that New Jedi Order was just the beginning of Rey’s next journey, implying the possibility of another trilogy on the horizon.

Details about Star Wars: New Jedi Order have been few and far between — which is unsurprising given the rocky status of many Disney projects — but while speaking to THR about her most recent film Magpie, Ridley mentioned her anticipation to reprise the Rey Skywalker role. Intriguingly, when referring to the project, Ridley stated, “I feel like the new one/new ones will be so interesting.” This phrasing suggests the existence of multiple upcoming films in which Rey appears. “I feel like the new one/new ones will be so interesting. Time has passed and a lot has changed for me, personally, so it’ll be interesting to come back to someone who I know so well, but in such a different moment. For me to inhabit Rey again after all the time that we haven’t seen her, it’s actually scary, but it’s also exciting.”

Rey’s Movie(s) Could Define the Future of Star Wars

It’s entirely possible that Ridley is just referring to the future of other Star Wars properties, such as The Mandalorian & Grogu or the untitled Lando Calrissian film featuring Donald Glover. However, Star Wars: New Jedi Order has already experienced a few upheavals since Disney’s announcement of the project some months ago, including cycling through three different writers. With so many changes in leadership and direction, it’s also entirely possible that the concept of the film has evolved into a series rather than a stand-alone feature — especially since Ridley seems eager to continue telling Rey’s story.

It’s safe to say that Disney seems to be floundering just a little bit when it comes to expanding the Star Wars franchise. Where some releases have been largely successful, such as The Mandolarian and Andor, others have failed to win over their audience — with a few projects never even making it out of development. Part of this instability could be attributed to a lack of consistency. Since the conclusion of the Star Wars sequels in 2019, Disney has yet to create another connected storyline via feature-length films, which means that every new installment in the Star Wars universe requires new characters, settings, and plots. It’s a lot of work that just doesn’t seem to be paying off.

The Rise of Skywalker was also regarded by many fans to be a disappointing conclusion to the sequel series, and reactions to Rey’s character arc were largely lukewarm at best. With all of these issues in mind, creating another Rey-centric trilogy could be the best move for Disney regarding the future of Star Wars. A single, connected story would ground an otherwise fragmented universe while simultaneously offering Rey a chance for redemption in the eyes of the audience. Another trilogy would also return Star Wars to its roots, which could appeal to older, more established fans who might miss the days of theatrically released movies rather than a seemingly endless parade of television shows. Overall, it seems like the best course of action, but Disney, unfortunately, doesn’t have the best track record when making decisions about Star Wars.
