Adventure Time follows Finn the Human and Jake the Dog as they tackle fun adventures all over a brightly colored land populated with strange creatures. The Cartoon Network show became a huge hit thanks to its inventive storytelling and its goofy humor, and it managed to amass a fan base which consisted of both children and adults. The series ended in 2018, but it has had two subsequent spinoffs.

Adventure Time has 10 seasons, but fans of the show are still eager for more of Finn and Jake’s exploits, and more explorations in and beyond Ooo. 4 Fionna & Cake Season 2

Adventure Time’s gender-swapped spinoff was renewed in December 2023

The ending of
Fionna and Cake
season 1 wraps up the storyline nicely, but there is still a lot of potential for new plots.

Adventure Time‘s first big spinoff has already received the green light for a second season. After a first season that was a hit with both fans and critics, Fionna and Cake was renewed in December. A release window hasn’t yet been set, but 2025 seems likely. This means that Fionna and Cake season 2 will probably arrive before any of the other Adventure Time projects. It’s possible that Fionna and Cake will tie into the other shows and the Adventure Time movie, even though it is set primarily in an alternate universe.

The ending of Fionna and Cake season 1 wraps up the storyline nicely, but there is still a lot of potential for new plots. With Fionna and Cake defeating Scarab, they will still have to reckon with the fact that their reality was not supposed to exist. This crisis will probably lie at the heart of Fionna’s character as she searches for new meaning. There could still be a lot of multidimensional hijinks with Simon, too, and Prismo’s presence means there are limitless possibilities awaiting them in the cosmos. Fionna and Cake could also delve into some of the unanswered mysteries from its first season, like the identity of Prismo’s boss.

Fionna and Cake is more mature than Adventure Time, so the series gives older viewers a chance to stay in touch with the show that they grew up watching. Adventure Time was initially released in 2010, so children who watched Cartoon Network at the time are adults now. While Fionna and Cake provides them with more age-appropriate thrills, the other Adventure Time projects will entertain younger audiences too.

3 Adventure Time Movie

Finn and Jake are set to return for a big adventure

Adventure Time

Cast
Tom Kenny , Hynden Walch , Jeremy Shada , John DiMaggio , Niki Yang

Release Date
May 10, 2010

Seasons

A team of
Adventure Time
veterans will be spearheading the new movie, including Adam Muto, Rebecca Sugar and Patrick McHale.

The big news is that an Adventure Time movie is in the works, although the details are still being kept under wraps. There are only a few things which have been confirmed. A team of Adventure Time veterans will be spearheading the new movie, including Adam Muto, Rebecca Sugar and Patrick McHale. Muto was the Adventure Time showrunner throughout seasons 5-10. Sugar also created Steven Universe, and McHale co-created Over the Garden Wall. Adventure Time fans can be sure that the movie is in good hands.

The plot details about the movie remain frustratingly vague, with the only information being the tease that it will be Finn and Jake’s “greatest adventure yet.” (via IGN) It will be tough to top Adventure Time‘s crowd-pleasing finale, but the animation superteam at the helm give the movie the best chance possible. Since many of Adventure Time‘s best villains have already been defeated, finding a new bad guy for Finn and Jake to face may be a good place to start teasing out potential story ideas.

Until more information becomes available, fans will be left to speculate about the content of the Adventure Time movie, but it will be welcome news nonetheless. One of the main challenges facing the movie will be the temptation to provide a bigger and more action-packed story, and trying to balance this with all the things which made Adventure Time so popular in the first place. Movies based on TV shows aren’t always so well-received, but hopefully the challenges of the new format will be overcome, and Finn and Jake will have one last epic adventure together.

2 Adventure Time: Side Quests

Standalone episodes to explore a variety of characters and settings

Since
Side Quests
has no clear focus and a broad remit, it could act as multiple
Adventure Time
spinoffs all rolled into one. The story possibilities are practically limitless at this point.

While some fans have been calling for a second season of Adventure Time: Distant Lands, the newly-announced spinoff, Side Quests, may be the next best thing. The child-oriented show promises to focus on standalone episodes, rather than long multi-episode arcs that require fans to keep up with lore. Both Adventure Time and Fionna and Cake can be a little daunting for first-time viewers who don’t have all the necessary context, so Side Quests may be a little more welcoming. It should also be easier to dip in and out of.

Side Quests will be set years before the events of Adventure Time, while Finn is still a child who dreams of his future endeavors. As the name suggests, Side Quests will also provide an opportunity for the show’s greatest side characters to shine. The creators have already teased the appearance of a younger version of Ice King, and it’s likely that some other fan-favorites will show up too. Princess Bubblegum and the other Adventure Time princesses are fairly obvious candidates. Marceline, Lemongrab, Prismo and many more side characters could join.

Since Side Quests has no clear focus and a broad remit, it could act as multiple Adventure Time spinoffs all rolled into one. The story possibilities are practically limitless at this point. The show could explore the world beyond Ooo and a whole range of new characters, or it could feature popular characters in a different setting. Side Quests is the most mysterious out of the three new projects which have been announced. Even though it seems focused on self-contained stories, it has the potential to expand on the complex mythology of Adventure Time.

1 Adventure Time: Heyo BMO

A preschool adventure featuring BMO learning about the world

Heyo BMO
will be tailored to a preschool audience, so the show could connect with a whole new generation of fans who are unfamiliar with
Adventure Time
.

BMO will be getting their own spinoff show as part of the plans to expand the Adventure Time franchise. Heyo BMO will be tailored to a preschool audience, so the show could connect with a whole new generation of fans who are unfamiliar with Adventure Time. BMO is often an inconsequential side character in Adventure Time. Despite living with Finn and Jake, they rarely have much of an impact on the plot. Heyo BMO will give the adorable sentient gaming console a chance to shine once again, just like the episode of Distant Lands named after them.

The official art for Adventure Time: Heyo BMO suggests that the preschool show may have a different aesthetic. (via X) It looks like claymation, but it could just be 3D computer animation in the same style. The poster shows BMO surrounded by small bugs that appeared in Adventure Time, including Shelby, King Worm and the mysterious snail that appears in almost every episode. There’s no sign of Finn or Jake, so it’s still unknown whether they will make an appearance or not. It may be better to keep things simple and have relatively few links to Adventure Time.

Heyo BMO is the most unexpected of all the new Adventure Time projects, and it suggests that the franchise may be ready to expand further. If Adventure Time can produce a show with a different style, for a different audience, with only minor links to the main series, then there’s no way of knowing what could be next. After years of relative silence, the Adventure Time franchise is set for an exciting new era. Heyo BMO will follow the character as they approach new challenges and try to fill their database, and the franchise will also be embarking on a new journey.
