“How to Train Your Dragon” is running it back in live action.

For children who grew up with the animated adventures of a Viking teen and his best dragon friend Toothless, the remake (in theaters June 13) is a rousing nostalgia play that showcases their favorite characters in the flesh, from Hiccup (Mason Thames) and his crush Astrid (Nico Parker) to burly Viking chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler).

And for the littlest film fans, it’s an action-packed introduction to the dragon-filled world of Berk originally created by author Cressida Cowell.

But is the latest “Dragon” as kid-friendly as the 2010 original DreamWorks movie? Here’s what parents need to know about the new redo:

What is ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ about?

Hiccup is an inventive, awkward teen who’s an outsider among his fellow Vikings. During a dragon raid on Berk, he hits and injures a super-rare Night Fury. He goes to kill the beast, to prove that he can be a Viking warrior, too. But he can’t do it. Instead, Hiccup helps the dragon, names him Toothless, and they become friends. The kid tries to convince his gruff father, his dragon-fighting classmates and others that they should be embracing the creatures rather than eliminating them.

What is ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ rated?

The new movie is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association “for sequences of intense action, and peril.” The film begins with a massive dragon attack on Hiccup’s village and the Vikings fight back against them; the climax of the movie is a large-scale battle with humans and dragons teaming up to take on an ancient, kaiju-sized creature. The latter especially puts Hiccup and Toothless in some harrowing situations.

How long is ‘How to Train Your Dragon’?

The “Dragon” remake is two hours and five minutes, whereas the original animated movie is one hour and 38 minutes.

Is the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ remake appropriate for little kids?

There’s a lot to love for youngsters, from Thames’ likable Hiccup – a less nerdy take on Jay Baruchel’s cartoon version – to nifty flying sequences with Toothless that are excellent to watch on a big screen. It does skew a little older than the first film, mainly because of the flesh-and-blood teens that now populate the movie, but there’s nothing too too scary for youngsters.

While most of the dragons, like Toothless, have carried over their adorable quirkiness from animation to live action, the giant monster dragon at the end feels pretty fearsome, so that might freak out your smallest ones. And there’s a moment when you really worry for Hiccup’s safety – the aftermath, as in the animated movie, might be a little shocking but does add depth to his character.

How many ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ movies are there?

There’s one live-action remake, plus a sequel that’s in the works. The franchise also includes the original animated trilogy – the 2010 first film, 2014 sequel and 2019’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” – which can be streamed on Peacock.

Peacock also has a number of spinoff animated series including “Dragons: Riders of Berk,” “Defenders of Berk,” “The Nine Realms” and “Heroes of the Sky.” So if your kids are dragon-curious, they’ve got plenty to binge over summer break.

Where can I watch ‘How to Train Your Dragon’?

The remake is in theaters nationwide, so you’ll have to wait a while to watch it at home. Depending on how much of a box-office success it is, “Dragon” likely will be available at video-on-demand platforms in July or August and come to Peacock in the fall, probably late September or October.
