Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam requires no introduction. Well known for his exceptional contributions to Indian cinema, his films frequently explore socio-political concerns against the backdrop of intense human connections. Not just that, the director has also worked with some of the leading stars in the industry, creating characters that are relatable with his amazing storytelling skills. On the occasion of his birthday, here are some must-see films that best demonstrate his directing abilities.

  1. Roja
    It is a film that combines the sweetness of love with the grim realities of politics. It recounts the lives of Roja, a woman from a small Indian town whose husband is kidnapped by militants during their honeymoon in Kashmir. With Mani Ratnam’s direction and AR Rahman’s soul-stirring soundtrack, the film turned out to be a big hit, even bagging three National Awards.

    The film brings attention to the mental pain and challenges that parents face while raising a child with an intellectual disability. Mani Ratnam shows how children with special needs are discriminated against in a judgemental society.
  5. Mouna Ragam
    Mouna Ragam attempts to decipher complex feelings in a problematic arranged marriage. It shows the story of a young woman who is married to another man while still trying to recover from the death of her lover.

Upcoming Projects

While Mani Ratnam’s legacy is long, the filmmaker tries to bring something new to the screen with each release.

He is now preparing for his upcoming film, titled Thug Life. An action film, it will feature actor Kamal Hasaan. Raaj Kamal Films International will co-produce Thug Life with Madras Talkies. Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Dulquer Salmaan, Abhirami, and Nasser are part of the film’s ensemble cast.

Mani Ratnam will work alongside cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran, editor Sreekar Prasad and music composer AR Rahman.
