New Predator Movie Casts The Great Star

The Great star Elle Fanning has found her next project. The Emmy-nominated actor is reportedly in talks to lead the cast of 20th Century Studios’ next Predator movie, Badlands.

According to Deadline, Fanning is in negotiations to star in Badlands, which will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg. 20th Century had no comment on the reported casting. Fanning is perhaps best known for her Emmy-nominated performance as Catherine The Great in the Hulu series, The Great. She has also appeared in several notable movies, such as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), Super 8 (2011), and The Beguiled (2017), and as Princess Aurora in the live-action Disney movies Maleficent (2014) and its 2019 sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Audiences can see Fanning next in James Mangold’s upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, opposite Timothée Chalamet.

Badlands Is Not a Prey Sequel

Badlands was announced in February 2024 following the success of the 2022 Predator prequel, Prey, starring Amber Midthunder. Released directly on Hulu, Prey was set in the Northern Great Plains in 1719, following Midthunder’s Comanche warrior, Naru, as she tries to save her tribe from a primitive Predator. Prey received glowing reviews from both critics and fans and was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, winning one for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special.

Despite Badlands reuniting Prey director Trachtenberg and screenwriter Patrick Aison (who co-wrote the upcoming installment with Trachtenberg), the sixth installment in the main Predator film series is not a direct sequel to the 2022 movie. Instead, Badlands will be set “sometime in the future.” Badlands is expected to be the first of many new Predator projects developed in partnership between 20th Century and Trachtenberg.

Prey 2 Could Still Get Made

Although not yet greenlit, it has been reported that a sequel to Prey could still happen after the release of Badlands. In August 2023, Trachtenberg confirmed that he had had “really exciting conversations” with 20th Century about continuing the story of Naru and the Comanche Nation. Midthunder has also expressed interest in reprising her role of Naru, revealing in January 2023 that she was “ready” for a sequel. “I loved that experience, I love that movie, and I would be happy to see where else we can take it,” she said at the time.

Badlands does not yet have a release date. It is also unknown at this time whether 20th Century has a theatrical release planned for the movie or if it will be released straight to Hulu like Prey.
