Filmmaker and frequent Marvel Studios collaborator Ray Chan has sadly passed away. Marvel has confirmed the news while sharing a tribute story for Chan on the company’s official website.
“Ray was first and foremost a good friend to everyone at Marvel Studios. He was a talented collaborator who brought creativity and attention to detail to every frame of every movie he worked on, and who was able to bring out the best in each department he worked with,” Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito said in a statement. “He was the nicest human being and was such a pleasure to work with, hugely generous, and the kind of person who could take the seed of an idea and turn it into something beautiful. We are devastated by his passing. He will be missed by everyone at Marvel, and our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends.”
The statement shared by Marvel added, “Ray was an incredible production designer who helped imagine and design the Marvel Cinematic Universe. From Xandar to the Sanctum Sanctorum, Ray brought distinct, lived-in worlds to the screen, spanning the far reaches of space to a Louisiana fishing boat. He was also a wonderful friend and colleague who will be dearly missed by everyone who had the privilege of working with him.”
Chan’s work on Marvel Studios films dates back to Thor: The Dark World, released in 2013. After working on that film as a Supervising Art Director, Chan would continue to serve in that role on several other major Marvel Cinematic Universe releases, such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Chan has also served as Art Director on the crossover film Spider-Man: No Way Home, and worked as Production Designer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine.
Marvel fans got to meet Chan with his appearance in the Disney+ documentary Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The doc explored the making of the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier with Chan detailing how the city of Madripoor was designed.
Outside of Marvel Studios, Chan was involved with many other high profile movies. He was Supervising Art Director for National Treasure, Blood Diamond, Knight and Day, and Wrath of the Titans, and he served as Art Director for films like Alien vs. Predator and Children of Men. As Production Designer, he also worked on the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Chan’s survivors include his wife, Lindsay, along with his children, Caspar and Sebastian. Rest in peace, Ray Chan.
