Ryan Gosling will return to science fiction (following in the footsteps of Blade Runner 2049) with Project Hail Mary, which contains a premise that sounds awfully similar to two former critically acclaimed Christopher Nolan movies. The upcoming sci-fi film is adapted from Andy Weir’s 2021 book of the same name. Project Hail Mary (the novel) follows Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher who becomes an astronaut and later wakes up from a coma with amnesia. Ryland has some memories of his last space mission, but if he doesn’t put the puzzle pieces together soon, the future of humanity could be at stake.

Gosling is set to star as Ryland in the movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary. Meanwhile, the only other announced cast member is Sandra Hüller (of Anatomy of a Fall fame), who is playing an unknown role. Gosling’s new sci-fi movie can redeem his box office letdown (First Man) from 2018, and based on its story, it has what it takes to be the actor’s best space film. Project Hail Mary‘s Christopher Nolan-adjacent premise mixed with Gosling’s star power is a recipe for success, after all.

Gosling Is Playing An Astronaut In The Upcoming Sci-Fi Film

Ryan Gosling’s space movie Project Hail Mary sounds like the perfect combination of Christopher Nolan’s Memento and Interstellar. Memento was released in 2000 as Nolan’s second film, which he directed and wrote. It revolves around Guy Pearce’s Leonard Shelby, a man with anterograde amnesia who tries to identify his wife’s murderer, the one also responsible for his memory loss. Meanwhile, Interstellar is a 2014 epic sci-fi drama that Nolan directed and co-wrote with his brother, Jonathan Nolan. Interstellar chronicles a dystopian future where Earth is dying, and a group of astronauts set out to find a new home in space.

Since Project Hail Mary features astronauts on a mission to save humanity and a main character who suffers from memory loss, the upcoming film’s premise is quite similar to Memento and Interstellar. Of course, there are some differences between Gosling’s sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary and Nolan’s previous two projects. However, one can’t help but think of Project Hail Mary as a fusion of Memento and Interstellar, due to its story.

Nolan Would Be The Perfect Person To Helm The Upcoming Sci-Fi Film

Unfortunately, Christopher Nolan isn’t directing Project Hail Mary. Instead, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are helming the upcoming space film, while Drew Goddard is writing the script. Lord and Miller are impressive filmmakers in their own right, having directed 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie. Plus, the duo produced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (with Lord also serving as a co-writer) and produced and co-wrote Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Nevertheless, Project Hail Mary sounds more up Nolan’s alley, and given his renowned talent and expertise, it’s easy to hope that Nolan was directing the Ryan Gosling space movie.
