Sydney Sweeney has been in many successful projects, and she rose to fame thanks to her role as Cassie Howard in Euphoria. Since then, she has gone on to star in many different projects, and among her future roles is a biopic about a boxing legend.
In a series of photos on her Instagram, Sydney Sweeney officially confirmed that she will play boxing legend Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic, as the news broke out earlier this year, and that filming has begun. Producers have previously described Martin as the “female Rocky” when announcing the project. The actress underwent a major transformation for her role in David Michôd’s upcoming untitled drama about the boxer, switching her regular gold locks for a dark mullet. The Anyone But You star confirmed the role after paparazzi leaked the photos of her on set on Oct. 15.

“Well the cats out of the bag thanks to some paps in bushes so here’s a little bts from my film [I’m] working on right now,” Sweeney started her post which includes two pictures from the set of the upcoming biopic, one of them showing her physical transformation and muscles.
“Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman — a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring,” the actress continued. “Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. more to come soon,” before revealing she was talking about Christy Martin.
In the images leaked by paparazzi, the actress wore a bandana and baggy clothing to channel Martin’s appearance. The transformation is impressive, as Sydney Sweeney is usually known for her sultry looks, highlighted in the successful 2023 rom-com Anyone But You.
Christy Martin is a former professional boxer, and she competed from 1989 to 2012, becoming world champion in the super welterweight class in 2009. Her career alone is impressive, but she also survived a murder attempt by her husband, James Martin, in 2010, after he stabbed and shot her. James Martin was convicted in 2012 of attempted second-degree murder and is serving a 25-year sentence in prison.
The cast of the upcoming untitled biopic also includes The Punisher‘s Ben Foster as James Martin, Merritt Weaver (The Walking Dead), Katy O’Brien (The Mandalorian), Ethan Embry (Gotham Knights), Jess Gabor (Shameless), Chad L. Coleman (The Walking Dead), and Tony Cavalero (Cobra Kai). Anonymous Content, Black Bear, Fifty-Fifty Films, Votiv and Yoki Inc. are producing.
What Is Next for Sydney Sweeney?
Aside from her upcoming biopic about former professional boxer Christy Martin, the actress is working around the clock. 2024 was a big year for Sweeney, as she enjoyed the popularity of 2023’s Anyone But You, and had multiple films lined up. She kicked off the year with her first superhero role in the critically panned Madame Web. Sweeney appreciated the experience and moved on, starring in the horror Immaculate, and Ron Howard’s latest film, the thriller Eden, both receiving encouraging reviews.
