The horror scene has been electrified by the 2024 release ‘Heretic’, with Hugh Grant delivering a ‘brilliant’ performance that’s got everyone talking.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the masterminds behind the hit ‘A Quiet Place’, have penned and directed this American psychological horror. In ‘Heretic’, they delve into the realm of religion, specifically Mormonism, weaving a narrative that examines faith and its potential for manipulation.

Hugh Grant, at 64, takes on the role of Mr Reed, an enigmatic figure keen to explore the Mormon church. His interactions with Mormon missionaries, portrayed by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, start innocuously but soon take a sinister turn as his home begins to exude an unsettling atmosphere.

One Rotten Tomatoes critic said: “Really liked this film, thought-provoking in the ways in which it gets you to look at religion. Great to see Hugh Grant in something other than a floppy-haired love interest… The ending makes you question, ‘How did it really finish! ?’ So in my mind, a good movie.”

Grant’s portrayal has earned him best actor nominations at prestigious ceremonies including the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the BAFTAs. Not only has the industry taken note of his departure from romantic comedy roles, but audiences are also astounded by the stark contrast in his latest characterisation, reports the Mirror US.

The esteemed actor, renowned for his emblematic roles as the epitome of British charm in beloved 1990s romcoms such as Love Actually, Bridget Jones, Notting Hill, and Four Weddings and a Funeral, is turning heads with his starkly contrasting performance in Heretic.

One review says: “Great acting. Hugh Grant was fantastic. I love when they play roles totally out of character. Must see.”

In stark contrast to his typically endearing personas, another admirer noted Grant’s “captivating” execution as the enigmatic elder, saying: “Excellent concept, expertly portrayed by Hugh Grant. Chilling and captivating with a real sinister chemistry. The only thing that lets it down is a bit of a lackluster ending, but otherwise it’s great.”

Heretic delves into the unnerving journey of two young Mormons after they critically examine their faith within the abode of Mr. Reed, played by Grant, who offers them a bewildering choice between two doors, both leading to the same ominous conclusion.

A thrilled audience member said: “Hooked me from the start”, adding: “This film questions religion and your sanity. Fantastic performance from everybody. You can’t help but love Hugh Grant in this.”

For those on the lookout for a spine-chilling or unsettling film experience, Heretic is now available for streaming on Apple TV.
