Demon City

This all-new Japanese action film joins the long list of manga adaptations on the streamer, especially those in the action genre. Demon City is written and directed by Seiji Tanaka (Melancholic) and is a live-action adaptation of the manga, Oni Goroshi, by Masamichi Kawabe. Set in the city of Shinjo, the film follows an ex-hitman named Shunei Sakata (Toma Ikuta), accused of killing his wife and daughter and then failing to kill himself, who spent 15 years in a prison hospital, despite being innocent. When he is released, Sakata has a chance encounter that helps him recover and he vows to exact revenge on the “masked demons” who have assumed complete control of the city and framed him for his family’s murder. Even though the manga’s title directly translates to “demon slayer,” Demon City has no connection to the popular manga of the same name or its associated properties. An action thriller centered around a personal tragedy and deep-seated vengeance, Demon City is comparable to Old Boy or similar revenge thriller films. Depicting brutal violence and modern martial arts, Demon City draws heavily from the original manga.

Following an 18-month stint on Peacock, Despicable Me 4 will arrive on Netflix this February. The sequel sees Gru, his family, and his most trusted minions dealing with another new nemesis. Also directed by Chris Renaud, Despicable Me 4 sees the reformed supervillain and secret agent, Gru, relocating his family to a safe location when his old nemesis, Maxime Le Mal, escapes prison and swears revenge on Gru by threatening his infant son, Gru Jr. A summer 2024 release, the comedy adventure film earned mixed reviews but continued to rule the box office, following suit of all its previous installments, and becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year. Besides its main returning cast, Despicable Me 4 also features an additional ensemble cast with Joey King, Will Ferrell, Stephen Colbert, Sofía Vergara, and Chloe Fineman, with Tara Strong voicing Gru Jr. Even if the story/concept of the film does not match up to its predecessors, Despicable Me 4 fulfills the franchise’s promise of a thrilling family movie with new characters and superhero minions.
