The Marvels director Nia DaCosta looks to bounce back from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film’s record-breaking failure with her next project. That next movie could reportedly be an upcoming film in the planned 28 Years Later trilogy.
Per Deadline, DaCosta is set to make the second installment of the 28 Years Later franchise, with the 34-year-old filmmaker negotiating with Sony Pictures about boarding the project. The planned sequel will see DaCosta in the director’s chair, with 28 Days Later star and Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy executive producing. Danny Boyle, who directed 28 Days Later and is set to helm the first 28 Years Later film, will also produce the sequel.
The Marvels Star Addresses Possible Return as Binary in the MCU’s X-Men Reboot
The Marvels actor Lashana Lynch responds to speculation about joining the MCU’s X-Men as Binary.
Though there are no production or release windows confirmed as yet, the reported plan is for 28 Years Later to begin filming later this year, with the sequel shot concurrently, which explains why Sony is trying to secure DaCosta as a director for the follow-up in advance. 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland will pen each movie in the trilogy. Sony won the distribution rights to the trilogy this past January, with Murphy officially joining the project.
28 Years Later Will Continue the Story
Released in 2002, 28 Days Later chronicled Murphy’s central character, Jim, a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma to find the world in shambles thanks to the accidental release of a highly aggressive and contagious virus threatening to wipe out humanity. The British post-apocalyptic film became a critical and commercial success, making $84 million against an $8 million budget, and became popular once more among movie lovers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The film was followed up by the 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, featuring Robert Carlyle and Jeremy Renner, which also attained critical and commercial success. Boyle and Garland had planned a threequel since 2007, though the project underwent several delays until finally getting greenlit early this year once Sony acquired the rights.

The Marvels Director Is Right: Captain America Is to Blame for Thanos’ Snap
The Marvels director, Nia DaCosta, is right in saying Captain America is to blame for Thanos’ deadly Snap in Avengers: Infinity War.
DaCosta is known for directing the 2021 supernatural black horror film, Candyman, which starred The Marvels‘ Teyonah Parris, Yahya Abdul Mateen II and Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo. After Candyman attained critical and commercial lore, there were high hopes when DaCosta made her directorial debut in the MCU, reuniting with Parris, as Brie Larson reprised her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. However, The Marvels set a new low for the MCU, failing to make back its $219 million net budget. The Captain Marvel sequel navigated lengthy reshoots and other production issues before its premiere.
Next up for DaCosta is the upcoming biographical film, Hedda, which sees her team up with The Marvels and Thor franchise star Tessa Thompson. DaCosta directed, wrote and produced Hedda, a re-imagination of Henrik Ibsen’s famous stage play, Hedda Gabler. Principal photography on Hedda began in the U.K. this past January.
No release windows have been confirmed for the 28 Years Later films. Meanwhile, The Marvels is available for streaming on Disney+.
