– The event, which will take place from 8-16 November, will launch four new sections this year
Submissions are open for features and short films interested in participating in the 21st edition of the Seville European Film Festival, which will unspool from 8-16 November. This edition will include four new sections and expects to feature around 150 titles, showcasing the best movies of the year.
The festival’s main focus will consist of six competitive sections with two standout novelties: Rampa (for emerging directors) and Alumbramiento (for films without distribution in Spain). The remaining sections will be part of the Official Section (European-produced films that are notable for their cinematographic quality, and for being narratively and aesthetically open-minded), Las Nuevas Olas (a look at contemporary European cinema), Panorama Andaluz (productions directed by Andalusian directors and/or made with the help of Andalusian companies) and EFA (organised in collaboration with the European Film Academy, where features and short films nominated for this year’s edition of the European Film Awards will be competing).
The non-competitive sections include two brand-new ones: Puerta Europa (aimed at those titles with smaller but still prominent European participation) and Esenciales Europa (European classics that should be seen in movie theatres). Some sections will remain untouched, like Cinéfilos del futuro (European features for youngsters), Europa Junior (European features for children) and Ventana Cinéfila (an online section of films for young people).
The various focuses, film cycles and special screenings are also being maintained. The latter will be dedicated to revisiting and highlighting the work of specific creators as well as that of schools with relevant artistic works, and will also examine certain trends. As festival director Manuel Cristóbal explained, “In this new era, we have rekindled our relationship with the European Film Academy, and in November, our festival will kick off the activities for the Month of European Film. In addition to that, there will be a new award called Puerta América, for which any European production representing its country for the Best International Film Award at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards will be eligible.”
