The director of the next MonsterVerse movie has been revealed.
The titular beast of 1954’s Godzilla has been terrorizing and enthralling audiences all the same for nearly seventy years at this point. While the original film, written by Takeo Murata and Ishirō Honda, the latter of whom also directed, depicted Godzilla as an abject menace, subsequent versions of the story have given rise to entirely different iterations of the character. Along the way, the franchise has been defined by its various eras, beginning with the Showa Era, which was followed by the Heisei Era that largely helped define the more fantastical elements of the series.
Godzilla Minus One Was a Huge Success
In recent years, two distinctly different breeds of Godzilla have been unleashed on audiences, including the unrelenting force of nature seen in writer and director Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One. Premiering in 2023, Godzilla Minus One brings viewers back to the mid-1940s to witness the rise and fall of the titular kaiju at the hands of similarly unrelenting survivors. While the film was lauded by audiences, especially those in North America, many Japanese critics called the film out for its jingoistic depictions of the era it is set in.
