A Minecraft Movie is the box office smash of the year, raking in more than $320 million worldwide in its opening week. But, for fans of the video game or parents of children who have played it, it’s hardly a surprise. Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, and, in the movie, Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge bring the story to life in an action-packed romp.
Before you head to the theater, you’re probably wondering if it’s worth waiting until the movie is available to stream at home. After all, loading up the kids and taking them to the movies is a serious investment (in this economy?!), and by now you’ve likely seen those videos of rowdy crowds watching it in person. So, if you’d rather watch from the quiet and comfort of your couch, we can’t blame you.
Still, you’ll have to wait to stream the movie at home. Warner Brothers has not given an exact date for a streaming release, but here’s what we know about the anticipated timeline. When the movie goes to streaming, it will be available on Max (it will not stream on platforms like Netflix, Disney+, or Hulu). Warner Brothers typically holds a movie for 60 to 100 days before releasing it on Max, so A Minecraft Movie will likely be on Max in June at the earliest.
You can preorder the movie now for the price of $24.99 on video-on-demand sites like Prime Video and AppleTV, but no release date has been given. Movies usually head to VOD 45 days after a theatrical release, which would put A Minecraft Movie on those services around May 19.
For now, the only way to watch A Minecraft Movie is by buying tickets and heading to your local theater.
