Wicked director Jon M Chu has lined up an unexpected new project, with the filmmaker set to explore the art of animation.

The director, who also helmed Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, is no stranger when it comes to the genre of musicals, and it seems he will continue down this path after The Hollywood Reporter wrote that he will direct Oh, the Places You’ll Go!.

Based on Dr Seuss’ children’s novel from 1990, which follows a young protagonist navigating the ups and downs of life, the upcoming project is set to be an animated adventure, with Jill Culton co-directing the film alongside Chu.

Rob Lieber will reportedly pen the screenplay, whilst Benj Pasek and Justin Paul – who have worked on La La Land, The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen – are primed to concoct the original songs.

Additionally, a release date has been set for March 17, 2028, with the film set to be projected on the biggest IMAX screen. There are no other details regarding the crew or cast, so be sure to keep your eyes out for future details.

Whilst Oh, the Places You’ll Go! is still a while away from hitting the big screen, fans of Chu won’t be short of content, as Wicked: For Good the second part of the adaptation of the Broadway musical – is set to be released in November.

The first instalment proved to be a huge commercial and critical success after it grossed over $700 million at the box office, with the musical also performing well during awards season after it amassed 10 nominations for the upcoming 97th Academy Awards.

Whilst Chu is putting the finishing touches on the sequel, the filmmaker recently shared that the crew were stunned when Cynthia Erivo sang ‘Defying Gravity’ live on set, recalling: “She extended [the note], and it’s echoing through this giant warehouse while she’s up in the air.

“We have leaves and wind blowing at her. I don’t even know how [sound] is getting into her airways because we’re just blowing air at her. But she’s doing it, she holds it the whole time, and it’s just silence after she’s done… I’m looking around [and] all the crew are crying.”

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! is scheduled to be released in cinemas on March 17, 2028.
