‘We Want to Capture the Soul of the Game’: A24’s Live Action Death Stranding Movie Unveils Ambition

A side-note during Kojima Productions’ big 10th anniversary livestream earlier today involved a brief update on A24’s upcoming live action adaptation of Death Stranding.
Now, if you’re feeling confused, allow us to clarify: Death Stranding Mosquito – the anime movie we wrote about previously – is an entirely different project. Yes, the franchise is getting two films.
The ambition for the live action movie – which will be directed by A Quiet Place: Day One’s Michael Sarnoski – is similar to the animated project, though: to flesh out the world and characters of Death Stranding with an original story.
Sarnoski explained:
“I think with this project, we really want to capture the soul of the game, capture the themes of the game, but tell a story you haven’t seen in that world and explore characters you haven’t seen before. [We want to] find all of that scope and all of those incredible real locations, but also find all of those nuanced characters and just do justice to this on a macro and micro scale.”
As mentioned previously, Kojima is too busy to actually direct the movie himself – although we’re sure he’d love to – but he’s “deeply involved” in it.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get any information about casting, plot, or shooting schedules. We suspect this is still much earlier in development than the anime, which received a trailer earlier today.
