When Rs 400 Crore Vanished: The Inside Story Of Bollywood’s Biggest 2024 Flop

In the past few years, Bollywood has seen several mega-budget films crash at the box office. One such 2024 release — despite all the hype — turned out to be a major flop.

The film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, was expected to set new records. Instead, it tanked so badly that it became one of Bollywood’s biggest box office failures of 2024.

Produced under Pooja Entertainment, the film had a massive Rs 400 crore budget but earned barely Rs 100 crore. The loss was so steep that the production house had to sell its office and lay off nearly 80% of its staff.

Released on Eid 2024, the film was meant to be a festive blockbuster. Instead, it left audiences disappointed and critics unimpressed, leading to one of the costliest flops in recent Bollywood history.

After months of silence, producer Vashu Bhagnani opened up on a podcast with Ronak Koticha, admitting that making the film with Ali Abbas Zafar was his biggest mistake.

Bhagnani revealed that despite repeated discussions, the director failed to understand the film’s tone. “I told him it’s a comedy with action, not an action film with comedy,” he said, blaming the over-the-top action for ruining the film’s essence.

Before release, Bhagnani had confidently predicted Rs 1,100 crore in earnings. After the flop, his son Jackky Bhagnani admitted, “We invested money but failed to reach the audience’s hearts. This was a big learning — money alone doesn’t make a hit.”
