Here’s a look at the films that stole spotlight in 2025
Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra
Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra has emerged as the top-grossing Malayalam film of 2025. Released in theatres on August 28, 2025, the ambitious superhero film quickly became a hit, thanks to positive word of mouth. Written and directed by Dominic Arun, the film has delivered impressive box office numbers and is now set to make its OTT debut soon.
According to Sacnilk, the film earned around Rs 155.84 crore in India and Rs 302.11 crore globally. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Dulquer Salmaan admitted that the success had exceeded expectations. “I was seeing responses from everywhere. It’s proof that audiences today are open to different languages and fresh storytelling. People watched it on day one, reviewed it, made reels – it was surreal,” he said.
Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra tells the story of an ordinary man who unexpectedly discovers he possesses superhuman abilities, setting him on a path of duty and sacrifice. As he learns to harness his powers, he becomes embroiled in a battle against forces that threaten humanity, blurring the line between his personal life and his responsibilities as a defender. With themes of heroism, identity and destiny, the film blends action, drama and spectacle, offering a fresh take on the superhero genre in Indian cinema.
Thudarum
Mohanlal’s Thudarum raked in Rs 5.5 crore on Day 1, making it the second-biggest Malayalam opener of the year. And guess who holds the No. 1 spot too? Yup, it’s still Mohanlal with Empuraan. Man’s literally competing with himself! Starring the legendary Shobana alongside Lalettan, Thudarum brought fans rushing to cinemas. The film opened at a whopping Rs 5.5 crore on Day 1, as per industry tracker Sacnilk.
