Zero Dawn’ Movie Takes a Major Step Forward
Sony’s long-anticipated Horizon: Zero Dawn movie is officially shifting into gear — and it looks like robot dinosaurs will finally be making their big-screen debut sooner rather than later. According to a new court filing obtained by The Game Post, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, confirmed that the Horizon film already has a completed script and is targeting a 2026 start date for filming, with a planned 2027 theatrical release.
The update comes directly from Qizilbash’s sworn declaration filed on October 16 as part of Sony’s ongoing lawsuit against Tencent over the Light of Motiram game, which Sony describes as a “slavish clone” of its Horizon franchise. And if you’ve seen it, my goodness it’s hilarious how much of a rip-off it is.
“We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures,” Qizilbash said. “We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027.”
Qizilbash also described Aloy — the series’ fearless red-haired protagonist — as a “key icon in the anticipated film” and emphasized her importance, in proper CEO jargon nonsense, “to the flywheel of franchise building.”
What Is ‘Horizon’ About?
For those unfamiliar, Horizon: Zero Dawn is a AAA action RPG developed by Guerrilla Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. When it first released in 2017, it was met with universal acclaim (including from this writer), inventive combat, and rich world-building. The game follows Aloy, a young outcast hunter in a far-future Earth dominated by animal-like machines, as she unravels the mysteries of her past and humanity’s downfall. This doesn’t even describe a tenth of how good the game, and its story, is.
The franchise has only grown stronger since then. Horizon: Zero Dawn saw a major resurgence when it was ported to PC via Steam, packaged with its Frozen Wilds DLC for no extra cost. This move marked Sony’s second major PC release of the year, following Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding.
The Horizon: Zero Dawn movie joins an expanding lineup from PlayStation Productions, which includes Chad Stahelski’s Ghost of Tsushima film, Sheldon Turner’s Days Gone movie, and new adaptations of Gravity Rush, Helldivers 2, and Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.
If all goes as planned, Aloy will be heading to theaters in 2027, so get training to take down those Thunderjaws while you have time.
