If your family is one of those which enjoys gathering around the TV during the winter holidays and watching the classic 1965 film, “The Sound of Music,” you may want to catch an early screening of the film this year.
That’s because the movie is returning to cinemas starting today, Friday, Sept. 12.
Vermonters will be especially interested, as the von Trapp family (portrayed in the film) eventually moved to the Green Mountain State from Austria.

It will also be back in theaters internationally beginning Sept. 20.

What is the “Sound of Music” about?
The true-life story is about Maria, a spritied young woman played by Julie Andrews, who leaves a convent to become the governess to the 7 unruly children of Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer).
As the movie goes on, she wins over the children and the Captain himself. However with war on the rise, Maria and the von Trapps are forced to escape.
The movie features famous songs like “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” and “Do-Re-Mi.”
The music in the film was written by Richard Rodgers while the lyrics were penned by Oscar Hammerstein II.

More about the von Trapps’ connection to Vermont?
After the von Trapp family escaped from Austria, and the danger of a looming war, the family moved to the U.S. and went on a national singing tour before settling in Stowe, Vermont in the early 1940s, according to the von Trapp Lodge and Resort website.
When the von Trapps moved to Vermont, they bought a large farm, which eventually developed into the von Trapp Family Lodge and Resort.
“They began welcoming guests to their 27-room lodge in 1950, laying the groundwork for what would become the full-service Trapp Family Lodge and Resort,” according to the lodge’s website. “The von Trapp family still owns and operates the resort, which is a beloved four-season destination in Vermont.”
The passage added that visitors to the lodge to this day can learn about the family’s true story and visit von Trapp gravesites.
Are any of the von Trapps still around Vermont?
Johannes von Trapp is the last surviving sibling from the original Trapp Family Singers.
He was born in 1939.
