The scientists at Miramax have apparently been working in the lab late at night coming up with an idea for an eerie sight. And what they’ve come up with is adapting someone else’s. The studio is turning Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s classic 1962 novelty Halloween song “Monster Mash” into an animated movie.

Miramax has optioned the right to “Monster Mash” from Reservoir and Capizzi Music Co. (news we first heard about at Deadline). Pickett’s song, which he co-wrote with Lenny Capizzi, is the definitive Halloween playlist track despite not technically being about Halloween. In fact, it’s a song about a song. None of which will matter when Miramax adapts “Monster Mash” into a movie about Halloween season. Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman specifically cited the holiday in his statement about the project.

For more than 60 years, nothing has said Halloween quite like the ‘Monster Mash.’ We’re thrilled to be entrusted by the Pickett and Capizzi families and to be partnering with Reservoir Media to bring this iconic song to life as an animated musical for all audiences. It’s a project that celebrates the fun and spirit of the original — and should become a perennial ‘graveyard smash’ for years to come.”

The project does not have anyone attached to it yet. But whomever writes the script will have a chance to give their spin on some questions raised by the song. That includes whether or not Dracula, a central figure in the song’s story, turned his son into a vampire after he was born or if his child was born a vampire. Also, an original score might finally let us hear the “Transylvania Twist” for ourselves.

That is, if “Monster Mash” ever gets the movie treatment. This isn’t the first time someone wanted to bring the song to the big screen. Hopefully, this time around, the scientists who cooked up this adaptation can, in fact, deliver a Halloween smash of a song about a song that had nothing to do with Halloween.
