Having grown up amid nature in Connecticut in the US, actor-musician Alexx O’Nell finds Kolkata very fascinating, and different from other cities. The actor known for films like Golondaaj, Yeti Obhijaan, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 and RRR among others was back in his favourite city on a whirlwind trip before leaving for a film shooting in Bolpur. CT caught up with him for a quick chat on his journey in the industry, why actors should actively engage in things that interest them apart from acting and more.

FROM THEATRE TO FILMS
Alexx started off with theatre in the US, and after almost a decade, he moved base to India. Even though he started off with modelling, he was soon chosen by R Balki for Cheeni Kum (2007). However, he says, it’s not the same acting on stage and on-screen. “When on stage, you get an instant, honest reaction from the audience. But in films, you have to turn your character on and off. Your best take may not always be the one that makes it. However, being on stage prepared me to be in front of the camera and 40-45 projects later, I can say it’s been an adventure,” he adds.

‘EXPLORE EXPERIENCES, NOT JUST ART FORMS’
The Still On My Mind singer, who has also been a part of Nach Baliye Season 3, says he thinks one will never know if you’re good at something unless you try it. “I love paragliding, scuba diving, motorcycling and horseback riding, even though I might not be the best at all of it. At the end of the day, I know that if a film is not working for me, I have so many other things to fall back on,” he says.

Talking about his experience of working with Sushmita Sen in Aarya, Alexx says, “It’s been a great experience working with Sushmita Sen, she’s absolutely amazing, and so supportive.”

‘I LOVE TO WORK WITH PEOPLE I CAN GET ALONG WITH’
Talking about what all he keeps in his mind before choosing a script, the Ae Watan Mere Watan actor says, “There are quite a few factors such as the level of passion everyone in the team has for the project. I’ve worked in a film where the director was busy playing on his phone during a shot, and it made me wonder if the director is not interested in the project, then what is its future. Second, I love to work with people I can get along with. Most importantly, even though it might be a small role, I look forward to bringing something to it.”
A KNACK FOR COMEDY & ROMANCE
Though Alexx feels grateful for all the films he has done so far, he expresses his desire to do more comedy and romantic films, “I haven’t explored these spaces much yet,” he says.

Alexx marked his debut in the Bengali film industry with Yeti Obhijaan, co-starring Prosenjit Chatterjee. Sharing his thoughts about Prosenjit, Alexx says, “I will be working with him again in Devi Choudhurani, and I make it a point to try and meet him atleast once, whenever I’m in Kolkata.”

Quotes:“I love Kolkata’s architecture, and the fact that the city is not all about sky-scrapers. The city is so green during monsoon and you can still see the sky. It’s not an imposing city and has an artistic soul””I moved my music career from India to South Africa, because the music industry here is linked to films. People want to hear non-film music, & musicians do make such music. But it seldom reaches a wider audience”Pics: Anindya Saha
