Thiruvananthapuram: Boukary Sawadogo who is at IFFK as the International Competition jury member said that Bollywood melodramas have a huge fan base in Africa. A native of Burkina Faso, he has studied extensively about African cinema and its evolution.“I grew up witnessing this trend. Especially in Northern Nigeria (we call it Nollywood), Bollywood films will be copied and remade incorporating local flavours. Though I skip songs in popular Indian movies, I liked Three idiots, said Sawadogo, a university professor who has been living in the US for the past 17 years.When asked about the latest trends in African cinema, he said African cinema is at crossroads. “New filmmakers, growing production and ever-expanding technology mark this. Local TV series, animation and gaming is the trend now,” he said. “Now everyone has got a camera and editing software. Some go directly to villages and show their work using projectors,” he said.He said that from 60s to 70s, cinema was a powerful political and cultural tool in Africa. “But from 1990 onwards, entertainment rules the roost and it is continuing. Serious filmmakers turn their camera towards internal security, terrorist issues in countries like Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Nigeria. The other significant issues that are being discussed are young people’s migration to developed countries due to economic crisis and plight of women,” he said.
