The makers of the film recently unveiled Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan’s characters on social media and ever since Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of Ashwatthama in the film was revealed, audiences have been intrigued to learn more about the mysterious character. From possessing the power of divine weapons to being cursed with immortality, here are 6 facts about Ashwatthama from the epic Mahabharata you must know before watching the film:

• The Mahabharata says that Ashwatthama’s name means “the sacred voice resembling that of a horse,” referring to the distinct cry he made at his birth. Other names for him include Dronaputra, Guruputra, and Kripi Kumara.
• Having been born as the son of Dronacharya and Kripi, Ashwatthama is considered the fifth incarnation of Lord Shiva.
• Ashwatthama was born with a holy gem on his forehead, which gave him power over all creatures smaller than humans and shielded him from illness, ageing, hunger, thirst, and even weapons. He became almost immortal and unbreakable because of this precious stone.

• He was well-known for being a strong Maharathi who fought in the Kurukshetra War on the Kauravas’ side against the Pandavas. 

• Being knowledgeable about several divine weapons, including the Narayanastra, Brahmastra, and Brahmashirastra, Ashwatthama was one of the most powerful fighters in the Mahabharata. But in the end, his impulsive nature led to his destruction. 
• Ashwatthama was cursed with immortality by Lord Krishna after he attempted to kill Uttara’s unborn child. Ashwatthama is thought to still be out and about in Narmada Ghat, and anyone who participates in the Narmada Parikrama may run into him there.
