Summary

  • With summer movie season approaching, many trailers have been released in the week beginning on March 25.
  • These have coincided with trailers for a promising lineup of new and returning TV shows.
  • More than a dozen new trailers premiered this week for projects including
    The Fall Guy
    ,
    The Acolyte
    , and
    Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
    .

A cavalcade of new movie and TV trailers have been released in the past week. The early months of 2024 were marked by an unusually slow drip of new movies and television titles in the wake of the 2023 Hollywood strikes, in which writers and then actors fought for fair pay. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers took 148 days to negotiate with the Writers Guild of America and 118 days with the Screen Actors Guild, resulting in work stoppages that saw many projects delayed or moved off the 2024 schedule.

However, now that the summer movie season is drawing closer, more and more upcoming 2024 movies are being advertised. While this is still a light summer compared to pre-strike years and especially pre-pandemic years, there is nevertheless a robust number of titles both on the big screen and the small screen. In fact, more than a dozen upcoming titles either received their first teasers or updated trailers since Monday, March 25.

Doctor Who

November 23, 1963

Of all the movie and TV trailers released this week, this has the most confusing title. The British sci-fi show Doctor Who originally ran for 26 seasons between 1963 and 1989 before its 2005 revival. Although the new season is the fourteenth of that revival, it has alternately been referred to as “season 1” or without any season number at all by the show’s new non-UK/Ireland distributor Disney+. Whatever it’s called, the first trailer offers a primer for new audiences who need to get up to speed while showcasing exciting new adventures for Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor.
