What To Expect From Johnny Depp’s Comeback Film

Jeanne du Barry had its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and has already garnered its first wave of reviews and buzz — including a seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes — which hint that the film will divide moviegoers. The French period drama, at the time of this writing, sports a 49 percent from critics on review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. While the film’s script — co-written by Maïwenn, Teddy Lussi-Modeste, and Nicolas Livecchi — seems to falter in the eyes of critics, Depp’s performance and the film’s costumes and visuals are applauded.

Based on the real-life relationship between Louis XV and Madame du Barry, the film focuses on the titular Barry, the illegitimate daughter of an impoverished seamstress, and her meteoric rise through Louis XV’s court. Shunned by many, including Marie Antoinette, the sheer presence of Barry shook many, and this should translate to an intriguing drama accompanied by the usual bells and whistles associated with period pieces.

Jeanne du Barry marks Depp’s highly anticipated return to the silver screen. This comeback arrives after Depp was dropped from the Fantastic Beasts franchise by Warner Bros. and his widely publicized legal strife with ex-wife Amber Heard. While Jeanne du Barry’s reviews so far don’t look so promising, the film’s box office gross in France does, as it’s grossed almost six million dollars in the country alone. This, Depp’s celebrated performance, and the biopic’s costume design hint that Jeanne du Barry is a solid comeback for Depp.
