Netflix and Legendary are backing the project, which has been developing the project for several years now. Filmmaker Shinsuke Sato, known for his numerous manga adaptations such as Bleach and Kingdom, remains attached to direct the feature.
Academia is set in a world where most of the population has “quirks,” also known as superpowers, and tells of a non-powered fanboy who wants nothing more than to be a superhero. When the world’s greatest hero sees his potential and gifts him powers, the teenager enrolls in a school for superheroes (the school’s motto is “plus ultra,” Latin for “push beyond”). That, of course, is just the beginning of his adventures.
One of the more modern mangas, Academia launched in 2014 in weekly comic magazine Shonen Jump. It’s quick popularity engendered an anime series, anime movies, awards, plus plenty of merchandise. It is said that over 100 million copies of the manga are in circulation, making it one of the best selling mangas of all time.
Anime is a massive business for Netflix as the form has crossed over into the mainstream as a cultural force not just in America but the world over.
Fuchs is known for writing big-budget fare with heroic journeys, with his credits including the aforementioned Wonder Woman, the first live-action solo take on the heroine that starred Gal Gadot. His next move is in television, acting as the co-creator, co-showrunner and exec producer of It: Welcome to Derry, as series prequel to Stephen King’s It novel. That show debut in Oct. 26 on HBO and HBO Max.
Fuchs also has a side hustle as an actor, appearing in movies such as It: Chapter Two and La La Land and shows such as The Passage and The Good Wife. He is due to appear in a recurring role on A24 and Peacock’s Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake.
He is repped by WME and Brookside Artist Management.
