Tom Cruise’s First Original Action Movie in 8 Years Finally Reveals Official Title
Months after potentially saving the world for one final time as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, Tom Cruise‘s team-up with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu has finally found a title, with an official announcement revealing the film is called Digger. Described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” the upcoming action comedy will be Cruise’s first original action movie in eight years, having focused on big-budget franchises for the past decade.
Set to also star the likes of John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, and more, the film is scheduled for release in October 2026, with the announcement accompanied by a poster, as well as a teaser dropped by Cruise himself that you can view below. Sporting boots and a shovel, Cruise demonstrates he’s a man on the edge by standing perilously close to danger. Back when the project was first announced, Cruise took to social media to gush over getting the chance to work with Iñárritu. He said:
“Today, I share the first photo taken last year during a rehearsal on the set of my new film with Alejandro G. Iñãrritu. Alejandro, 25 years ago I watched your first film, the classic Amores Perros. This weekend, 25 years later, I was deeply moved to have been presented the Honorary Oscar by you, my dear friend. I cannot wait to share our new film with you all next year!”
The Movie Marks a First for Iñárritu in a Decade
It isn’t just Cruise winding back the clock with Digger, it’s also Iñárritu, with the movie set to mark his first English-language pic since his 2015 hit The Revenant. Starring another Hollywood favorite in Leonardo DiCaprio, the film finally won the actor his long-awaited Oscar for Best Actor, although many believe he deserved it for his previous effort, The Wolf of Wall Street. At the 88th Academy Awards, The Revenant earned an eye-watering 12 nominations, including in the coveted Best Picture category, taking home three prizes, highlighted by the aforementioned win for DiCaprio and a Golden Statue for Iñárritu in the Best Director category. The filmmaker will be hoping to craft similar success with Cruise on Digger, with its October release a prime period for awards season contenders.
