The new Michael Jackson movie, Michael, is set for a 2026 release. Still, the movie has already managed to smash two trailer records.
On November 6th, the official trailer for the long-awaited biopic was released by Lionsgate. Within a day, it had broken a record; the trailer received 116.2million views worldwide in the first 24 hours. This is the most views Lionsgate has ever had for any of their movie trailers in the first full day.
Additionally, those numbers mean that the clip quickly becamee the most-watched trailer ever for any music biopic or concert movie. Now coming in at second is the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour trailer. In 2023, that trailer garnered 96.1million views during the 24 hours
The official synopsis for the upcoming biopic reads, “The film tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world.”
It continues, “Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins.”
Notably, the film has faced several issues; it was originally intended to be released in 2025, but has been pushed back to a cinema release date of April 26th, 2026.
In January, it was reported that the film was in jeopardy due to part of the biopic centring on the legal case involving Jordan Chandler, who accused Jackson of sexual misconduct as a child. Eventually, that case reached an out-of-court settlement with the performer for $23 million.
Nonetheless, the trailer depicts a grandiose depiction of his Jackson’s life; the movie stars Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson as his late uncle and marks the actor’s debut in a feature film.
The cast for the Antoine Fuqua-directed film also includes Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo. John Logan penned the screenplay.
