From what we know so far, the movie is being co-produced by Nintendo and Sony Pictures and is slated to release on May 7, 2027. We can expect it to bring the beloved fantasy world of Hyrule to life under the direction of Wes Ball, who has previously worked on The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and more.
Production for The Legend of Zelda Movie Has Reportedly Begun
While Nintendo has yet to make an official announcement, a new listing from ProductionList confirms that the Zelda movie has entered full production. The listings state that the movie is filming from November 4, 2025, through April 7, 2026, with production taking place in Wellington, New Zealand.
Known for its landscapes and cinematic history from The Lord of the Rings and Avatar, we’re not surprised that Wellington is the location that will bring the kingdom of Hyrule to life. While Nintendo has not yet released an official statement confirming that cameras are rolling, all signs point to production being fully underway.

‘The Legend of Zelda’ follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.
It doesn’t say if the movie will adapt a specific Zelda game or whether it’ll be a mix of stories from different titles. What we can say is that what we’re seeing so far describes a classic tale of courage and destiny that will feel instantly familiar to us.
Nintendo’s Movie Universe and When to Expect a Trailer

With cameras now rolling and The Legend of Zelda celebrating its 40th anniversary in early 2026, @MikeOdysseyYT, who first spotted the news, speculates that we could see a first trailer or teaser around or before the date. Nintendo gave us the teaser for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie when Mario celebrated its 40th anniversary.
Nintendo says they are preparing for ongoing movie releases in the future.

The Legend of Zelda film is the next major step alongside the Super Mario Galaxy movie in Nintendo’s cinematic strategy. After the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, the company is looking to take an even bigger step in the movie industry. The animated Super Mario Galaxy Movie is slated for April 2026, with The Legend of Zelda following just a year later.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently told investors that the company is “deeply involved in the production of multiple movies, from planning and development through to production.” If the schedule isn’t interrupted, we won’t have to wait very long for Link’s live-action adventure.
