Cillian Murphy will reprise his role from Peaky Blinders in the upcoming film spin-off, according the show’s creator.

The actor, 47, played Tommy Shelby in the BBC show, which ran for six series from 2013 to 2022. And it has now been announced that he is set to reprise the role in the film sequel, which is expected to begin filming later this year.

The news was shared by the show’s creator Steven Knight, 64 – who has teased about the film over the last year – earlier this week. He spoke about the project whilst at the premiere of his new show, This Town, in Birmingham.

Steven told BirminghamWorld that Cillian will “definitely” be in the film, which is believed to be set in the Second World War. He told the outlet: “He definitely is returning for it. We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.”

Fans have expressed excitement over the news on social media. One person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “This is a must tbh. Wouldn’t be the same without him.” Another said: “I am so excited. This news made my day.”

“Can’t wait,” someone else wrote on the platform. Another fan tweeted recently: “Excellent news!” Whilst a fifth commented: “Finally it’s happening.” One person said: “This is gonna be so good.” Another wrote: “Love this [news].”

It had been hoped that Cillian would reprise his role in the upcoming after reportedly being spotted in a meeting with Stephen in January. It was said at the time that his potential involvement was “shrouded in secrecy”.

Last year, Cillian teased that he was “open to the idea” of appearing in the film but shared that he liked the “ambiguity” of the show’s ending, which is understood to have shown his character Tommy riding off on a horse. He told Margot Robbie in a conversation for Variety: “I’m totally open to the idea but y’know I also do think it was a kind of perfect six seasons. It’s sometimes hard to move into the film format and I kinda do like the ambiguity of the ending. But I’m always open to like a great script.”
