The Monkey is written and directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Osgood Perkins, who’s best known for his roles in Psycho II, Legally Blonde, and Nope. Prior to adapting The Monkey, he also previously directed a few horror thrillers, such as The Blackcoat’s Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Gretel & Hansel and the upcoming Nicolas Cage movie Longlegs. In addition to Wan, the upcoming Stephen King movie is also being produced by Michael Clear, Jason Cloth, Dave Caplan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Chris Ferguson.

The official synopsis for The Monkey reads, “When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.”

Upcoming Stephen King Movies

The Monkey is part of the growing list of upcoming movies based on King’s other acclaimed literary works. This includes Mike Flanagan’s Tom Hiddleston-led The Life of Chuck movie, which is also based on another one of King’s short stories. The film has also wrapped up its production, with Karen Gillan recently promising to expect an “incredible” and emotional adaptation. Apart from The Life of Chuck, Flanagan is also currently developing his third Stephen King project in the form of The Dark Tower series, which he previously described as a dream project.

Initially slated for a theatrical release, New Line Cinema’s long-delayed Salem’s Lot remake will now make its debut on Max sometime in 2024. King recently called out Warner Bros. for delaying the film’s release. “I’ve seen the new SALEM’S LOT and it’s quite good. Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything,” he wrote on X. Last December 2023, it was also announced that Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence would be directing Liongstate’s film adaptation of King’s dystopian horror novel The Long Walk.

At the time of writing, the release date for The Monkey movie hasn’t been announced since it doesn’t have a distributor attached to it yet.
