April 11, 20243 Mins Read

A new Scary Movie is reportedly in the works. The new film, which will be the sixth installment of the movie series, is coming more than a decade after the last movie was released in 2013.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the new Scary Movie is set to begin filming later this year. Revealed to audiences at CinemaCon, the upcoming revival will be a joint project by Paramount and Miramax, and will be produced by Fast and Furious producer Neil H. Moritz. As the film is expected to begin shooting this fall, it’s likely to see its release in 2025.

Secrecy Surrounding Scary Movie

Besides the financiers and producers of the new Scary Movie, little else is known. The previous film, Scary Movie 5, was released over a decade ago in 2013 — so whether the upcoming film will be a sequel, a prequel, a reboot, or something else entirely is still up in the air. Furthermore, the cast is also still under wraps. The original Scary Movie franchise helped launch the careers of some big names, most notably Regina Hall as Brenda and Anna Faris as Cindy. Scary Movie was a smash hit upon its release in 2000, raking in $42,346,669 in the first weekend and $278 million globally. That being said, the new film has some massive (and costly) shoes to fill.

The Scary Movie revival is a fun but not entirely unexpected move from Hollywood; with the success of recent horror classic reboots, the Wayans’ flick seems a somewhat natural next step. 2022’s Scream, starring Jenna Ortega, pulled in over $56 million and was well-received by critics and audiences. 2023’s Saw X was also met with large box-office earnings and, despite a rocky history of sequels, was deemed by many one of the best Saw films to date in large part to Tobin Bell’s performance.

Blumhouse Is Rebooting The Blair Witch Project

The Blair Witch Project will be the next major horror franchise to be rebooted by Blumhouse.

As pointed out by THR, since the last Scary Movie‘s premiere in 2013 the horror landscape has changed quite a bit. The success of recent horror revivals as well as the domination of Blumhouse in the genre gives a huge amount of cultural context and new horror tropes for writers and producers to pull inspiration and comedy from.

No official dates have been set for the release of the new Scary Movie, but it is expected to hit in 2025.
